Short Answer: No Coffee Shops, No Legal Sales

Batumi, like the rest of Georgia, has no coffee shops. Not legal, not semi-legal, not "grey zone." Selling cannabis is a criminal offense throughout the country, and Batumi is no exception.

Everything you read online about a "Caucasian Amsterdam" or "coffee shops on the Black Sea coast" is either misinformation or tourism marketing. Parliament has officially rejected legalization, and there are no plans to open sales points.

What Batumi Has Instead

Batumi does have grow shops — stores for people who grow their own. That's legal because seeds and equipment aren't prohibited.

Stoners Bay Grow Shop — a specialized store in Batumi. They sell grow boxes, LED lighting, ventilation, nutrients. Plus accessories: bongs, grinders, vaporizers, papers, pipes. They also carry CBD oils and vape products. Staff helps with selection.

Green Lab — a grow shop chain with a Batumi location. Full range: soil, lamps, nutrients, grow boxes, seeds, accessories. They position themselves as "more than a grow shop" — an educational platform for Georgian growers.

GrowGrow — a grow shop chain with locations in Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi. Seeds, grow tents, grinders, and other equipment.

I Love Joint — a shop in Batumi with accessories, clothing, and CBD products. Reviews praise the staff and the CBD tea.

But these are not coffee shops. They're stores for growers and CBD enthusiasts. You can't buy marijuana there.

The Myth of "Relaxed Batumi"

Batumi is a tourist city. In summer, it's full of vacationers, bars, clubs, and a lively promenade. The atmosphere is free. But a free atmosphere doesn't mean free laws.

In the first three and a half months of 2026 in Georgia:

  • 45 people fined for smoking in prohibited places
  • 860 possession cases recorded
  • The majority were in Tbilisi, but Batumi is not a "reserve"
Police in Batumi work. Especially during tourist season.

What Tourists Risk

Administrative offense. Up to 5 grams of dried cannabis — 500 GEL fine (about $180). Smoking in public — a separate fine, 500 to 1,200 GEL.

Criminal offense. From 5 to 70 grams — up to 6 years. From 70 to 250 — 5–8 years. Over 250 — 8–20 years or life.

Deportation. For a foreigner, an administrative drug offense is grounds for refusing a residence permit. Tourists can be deported and banned from re-entering.

Import. Trying to bring cannabis into Georgia is a criminal offense. 6 to 9 years. The Constitutional Court removed punishment only for personal consumption—not for import.

What Locals in Batumi Say

Locals who smoke usually don't buy on the street. They have their own channels, their own circle, trusted people. A tourist who asks "where can I get some" will most likely get nothing.

Some tourists share stories on forums and Reddit: "locals helped." But that's not a system—it's luck. Today they helped, tomorrow they won't. And it's always a violation of the law.

The Bottom Line

Batumi has no coffee shops. Cannabis cannot be bought legally. Full stop.

There are grow shops for people who cultivate. There are CBD stores. There are bars with a relaxed atmosphere. But everything related to buying "weed" is a grey zone where only personal connections and luck work.

If you're coming to Batumi for the sea, wine, khachapuri, and Adjarian sunsets—you'll get all of that in abundance. If you're coming to "relax"—you're coming to the wrong place.
